Not only is it robbing land in a starving world – but it must be degrading the soil also. You just can`t keep taking crops from land forever, without putting something back – but they are taking the crops and turning it into fuel, to burn into the atmosphere!
What on earth are the `clever` authorities thinking about!

Biofuels are a hot debate. Yes, it is true that you do take it from a starving world, and yes it is also true that you burn it off, but the point with biofuels is they are renewable on a much smaller timescale, require less energy to process than conventional crude oil based petroleum sources, and cleaner burning fuels. They might not produce as much energy as standard fossil fuels but they are more environmentally friendly.
Biofuels currently are being produced with foodstock, like corn, lindseed, soy etc, however there are other plant materials left over from farming harvests like plant stalks and the alike that have potential to be converted into biofuels, but they are still researching into this. Other alternatives are things like tallow from the meat industry as fats from animal offcuts can also be processed into bio-diesel fuel.
The atmosphere issue you mention is not as big a deal with the bio-fuels because they can be re-introduced into the ground as part of the carbon cycle. The difference is that fossil fuel carbon cycle is non circular since the timescale for fossil fuels to be produced is far far greater than the biofuel crop. Any excess in the crop can also be sold for food purposes too.
The gdp is high its very costly biofuels are cheaper to rely less on the hydrocarbon fuels extracted from earth which have many acidic impurities and biofuels are cheap and has to be refined lot of.
