BEN H asked:
Why do we not irrigate /set up giant hydroponics systems in the desert and barren land of the world to supply bio-fuels we have the money and the technology to do so ;so why do we destroy woodlands/rain forests between the major petroleum company’s and fast food giants they have the money and its them that drive this so why not make them sort the problem or is because governments are to scared to stand up to big companies?

Do you know how hard it is to set up plants/crops in a desert? There is no soil, no water, and often extremes of temperatures. There’s a reason there’s no plantlife there in the first place.
You also need a LOT of water (because of the very low rainfall of deserts). Where does that come from? You have no rivers, no lakes, and no ocean. Can you imagine the cost of transporting enough water to cope with that?
Rainforests are practical to put biofuel crops in because you already have good fertile soil and high rainfall. Of course its possible to set up biofuel crops in a desert, but the cost would be enormous and who would pay for it? You also need to maintain the soil very well because desertification could soon take hold of the area again.
I’m all preserving the rainforests, but its harder than you think to claim desert land for biofuels. Where’s there’s no plants, there’s a reason for it.
I hope we do eventually pluck up the cost and effort in reclaiming desert land though. It would do a lot of good.
