There is no soil, no water, and often extremes of temperatures. There's a reason there's no plantlife there in the first place. You also need a LOT of water (because of the very low rainfall of deserts). Where does that come from? You have no rivers, no lakes, and no ocean. Can you imagine the cost of transporting enough water to cope with that? Rainforests are practical to put biofuel crops in because you already have good fertile soil and high rainfall. Of course its possible to set up biofuel crops in a desert, but the cost would be enormous and who would pay for it? You also need to maintain the soil very well because desertification could soon take hold of the area again. I'm all preserving the rainforests, but its harder than you think to claim desert land for biofuels. Where's there's no plants, there's a reason for it.
