Does keeping the car on Neutral actually ...

Yao11 asked:

I heard from someone that keeping the car in neutral while waiting at a stop light saves gas. (if it does work, would it be beneficial to put the fot on the brakes) Is this true? I have a 02 accord V6.

No, lol who told you that crap

NO, actually your RPM’s go higher on neutral so that means you waste more gas buddy

maybe a very tiny bit, but the savings is negligible. the load is on the motor when its in drive at a stop, but the rpms are still too low to see a noticible difference in fuel economy.

Automatic or manual transmission? In essence, this is exactly what you do with a manual transmission at a stop light, depress the clutch, which acts exactly as the automatic in neutral, disconnects the engine from the rest of the drive train. Idle in neutral consumes slightly less than an automatic idling in gear. The reason is the energy lost in the fluid coupling. The difference is so slight, it isn’t worth it in practice, unless you spend a LONG time stopped while in gear. You noticed the idle speed is lower in gear when stopped than in neutral, right? That is the fluid coupling placing a load on the engine, and any load causes higher gas consumption. So, YES, you can save some gas by placing an automatic in neutral, but you will not see any big change in how much you spend on gas. Even at the high prices of gasoline today, I think you would be looking at pennies a month. Of course, if you really need to pinch those pennies so much, it might be worth the effort.

only if you shut off the motor

It’s not really worth placing your car out of gear; you’re placing a tad of stress on the tranny when you shift back into drive and have to remember to shift every time the light turns green. If you forget to shift back into drive and rev the engine in neutral as you shift, the stress is even greater on the tranny. Unless you have a manual transmission/tiptronic , the automatic is designed to be left alone once you get going.

Im sure you have an automatic but if you slipped it into neutral you would save gas. but it would be the smallest amout. so very little. Yes your rpms will go a little higher but guess what? Theres no load on the enigne. Its not connected to the(in broken down form) the wheels. the eninge is spinning freely. its so very little its not worth the effort of moving the shift knob.

what you may save in gas (not noticable) would be far exceeded by the wear and ter to your trans. from additional stress putting it in and out of gear.
