For heavens sake save gas by driving slower, reading the road ahead and removing your foot from the accellerator pedal well in advance of stopping, this will also save on brake pads.
I don’t think you will save gas by switching the heater off as it is only using the excess heat used to cool the engine!
No. The heat is waste heat from the engine. The car has no other use for it, and it will just have to go out the radiator if it isn’t coming out through your heater core. That energy is all wasted whether you use it to heat the interior or not.
The only situation in which your car benefits from not using the heater is in extreme cold (like -60F or colder) where the engine isn’t staying warm enough. And in that situation you’re probably just going to say “screw it” and run it anyway. Otherwise it is only beneficial.
Now the FAN to circulate the heat…that DOES use gas. (It is a drain on the battery and that energy has to come from somewhere) The difference will be negligible, though.
The heat is free waste from the engine . The only part of the heat that consumes extra energy is the fan, and it only consumes a minimal amount of energy over the normal electrical requirements of the car.
Keeping the heat off the engine wont save gas. The best way to make your car more fuel efficient is to keep it tuned and to maintain it using quality parts proven to save fuel.
NO. It costs nothing to run the heater. However, if you use the defroster, the A/C compressor runs to remove humidity from the air and THAT will cost some 1 or 2 MPG which is really nothing as you don’t run it all day AND you need to clear those windows, right??
