its not good for the automatics to do this in them because when they first re-take in gear they have a tendency to take in a different gear than needed, that’s why you will feel it hold back, its not recommended that this method be done on an automatic, and it doesn’t help save enough gas to actually notice, but it may cost more in repair work than you could ever save in gas,its just a chance you would be taking with it,good luck.

I’ve heard this question many times. The answers is no. Here’s why…..

If you put the car in neutral, your rolling down the hill, most people call it “Free wheeling” this is both illegal and dangerous. If something popped out and you had to accelerate to get around it the car wouldn’t go anywhere. It’s also hard on your transmission, because your already in motion and you will shift back into drive. Shifting from neutral to drive with the car already in motion puts a lot of
stress on your transmission, just like it does when you are in motion and shift from drive to neutral. Even if you saved 10 cents in gas every time you put it in neutral, replacing a transmission costs a lot more than that. Also you’ll have to brake a lot more coming down a hill in neutral, which
means more wear on the brakes, and less brake life.

the problem that could occur is when you shift from neutral back into drive.

an no it’s doesn’t save enough gas to make it worth it.

It depends on the age of the car.

My old Datsun pickup had an all mechanical valve body and under these conditions would always reengage in second gear no matter what the speed. My current car has an electronically controlled transmission and will enter the appropriate gear for the current speed.

And no, it wont save much gas since the engine is at idle, the point at which the least amount of gas is used. You do get a slight benefit while in gear and the engine being pushed. The torque required to turn the alternator, water pump, oil pump, power steering pump and air conditioner is free.
